Alex the Lion lives in blissful captivity at New York's Central Park Zoo along with his best friends Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe and Gloria the Hippo. But, curious Marty escapes to explore the world he's been missing. Alex, Melman and Gloria go after him, and the four animals ultimately are apprehended. As a result of the incident, an animal rights group has them shipped off to Africa, where they are to be set free. But, when their ship capsizes, they find themselves washed ashore on the exotic island of Madagascar. Having had humans care for them their entire lives, they must quickly learn to survive on their own.
